The California Living Museum (CALM) will be closed on Nov. 27 for Thanksgiving but invites you to come out the following day, Friday, Nov. 28 for a free admission and a chance to help stockpile food for the animals on Feast for the Beasts Day. CALM, located between Hart Park and Lake Ming in northeast Bakersfield, will be open from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and will admit you for free in exchange for a food donation to the animals (based on type and quantity of food items listed below). The food donated will be stored at CALM and used to feed its animal residents throughout the winter.
List of acceptable food item types and quantities (any of the following):
3 lbs. pecans, walnuts, almonds and/or unshelled peanuts (all without salt or flavoring)
5 lbs. frozen mixed vegetables
2 lb. jar of peanut butter, jam or honey
2 lbs. dried fruit (raisins, apricots, banana chips, etc.)
5 lb. bag of IAMS dog food in the green or blue bag
5 lb bag of any type of dog food
5 lb bag of wild birdseed
2-boxes Zip Lock freezer bags, quart or gallon
2-12 oz. boxes of “Honey Bunches of O’s,” “Cheerios,” “Fruit Loops,” “Honeycomb” and/or “Frosted Mini Wheat’s”
3-12 oz. cans of salmon
$20 gift card from any pet, grocery, hardware or office supply store will admit two adults and two children.
“Everything on this list is vitally needed and helps keep the ever-rising food costs down,” said CALM Director Tom Anspach. “Feast for the Beasts is a wonderful tradition that officially begins the holiday season at CALM.”
